CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

As a diver or anybody involved in any kind of sporting activity, or just someone who cares for the wellbeing of others, completing a course in CPR is highly recommended and will be highly useful in an emergency situation where professional medical assistance is not immediately available. It could mean the difference between life and death for the unfortunate person having serious medical distress. When a person stops breathing or their heart stops beating, death can soon occur. Being able to properly administer CPR is a critical life-saving ability.

Many companies and organisations offer both Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (First Aid) training, you will find that most diving organisations have offerings.

This article recommends some sites for info on Primary Care, specifically with regards to A-D in the list below. The ABCDS of Primary Care are:-

  • A - Assessment of the scene; Airway open, Apply personnal barriers, Alert Emergency Medical Services
  • B - Breathing
  • C - Circulation - Chest Compression (CPR)
  • D - Defibrillation (AED)
  • S - Serious bleeding management, Shock Management, Spinal Injury Management

It should be noted that in most countries there are slightly different requirements regarding the performance of CPR between Adults and Children. Below are some links to resources offering guidance and/or training in CPR.

This list is not exhaustive and the guidance may or may not be relevant in your country, you should find out the specific requirements for where you are yourself.
